December 5th

Dec 1

This cold weather is going to last a few more days with lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s.

Moisture returns Saturday for some very chilly rain.  Freezing rain should not be a problem unless your travels take you into the gorge.  Will let you know if that ends up being different…

More cold rain Sunday with the chance for ice in the Columbia River Gorge.

Monday:  Wet with valley rain and showers and mountain snow.

Tuesday:  Low confidence.  Leaning towards mostly dry with just a couple of showers possible.

Up in the Cascades

Spots of ice and a few inches of snow can be expected in the mountain passes Saturday afternoon through Monday evening.  It won’t be a lot, but enough to make travel a little bit trickier at times.

Quick mountain update

A period of moderate to heavy snow looks likely Friday afternoon through Friday night.  Snow showers will continue Saturday (heavy at times).  The snow level should start up around 3500′ Friday afternoon before coming down to 2000′.

Come Sunday morning most ski resorts will have accumulated a solid 6 to 12 inches of new snow.

Sunday through Thursday will be similar to the valley: dry, sunny, good travel weather, but cold!!

November 20th update

Here’s the latest forecast for Thanksgiving and the rest of the week.

Nov 5

Take away messages are: Thursday afternoon through Friday evening will be very wet, and if you are looking for a dry day than your best bet is Saturday and then again on Monday.

Details

Wednesday:  Light rain through much of the day, specifically the second half of the day.

Thursday:  Showers early turning to steady rain with increasing winds gusting 25 to 30mph.

Friday:  More rain and breezy conditions.

Saturday:  Mostly dry with just a stray left over shower possible.

Sunday:  Mostly cloudy with some light showers.

Monday:  Mostly cloudy, but dry.

Tuesday & Wednesday:  Looking quite wet at this time.

Also keep in mind the Cascades above 3000′ for the most part will be snowy from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning.  Travel up there the rest of the week should be much better with just wet pavement.

The return of the mountain snow!

Mountain snow will be returning in full force Thanksgiving weekend.  This image shows the estimated total snowfall measured in inches by Saturday afternoon.   Looking at this we can see widespread 15 – 20 inches of snow for the Cascades.  It also shows a bit of snow for the Siskiyous down to our south.  This is great news for ski resorts, for our snowpack, and watershed.

EURO 11.17 mnt snow

To break it down in more practical terms: the best travel times will be any time before Thursday afternoon and then again any time after Saturday morning.  The time frame in between will be a snowy period with the snow levels generally 3000’ – 4000’.

In the gorge

Windy conditions will persist now through Wednesday.  The west end of the gorge will be the focus of these winds with gusts up to 60+mph near Troutdale and out towards Multnomah Falls.

Along the coast

Our storm Thursday evening and Friday will bring wind guests into the 50 – 65mph range, so very windy weather over there.

Rainy Cascades

I haven’t given a mountain forecast in some time so here it is.  Basically rainy the same days that the valley will be seeing rain.  This weeks’ storms will be too warm for snow, so no travel issues in that regard.  Not a lot of detail I know, but the message should be clear:  wet/rainy conditions the majority of the next 7 days.

For Central Oregon it will be much drier (as would be expected over there); however, even Sunday they will not likely escape the rain.

And there you have it 😉 .  Be safe out there!!
