January 2019

I’ve had these ready to post, but they sort of got put on the back burner with all I’ve had going on.  Anyway, better late than never.  🙂

Temperature:

Warmest high temp was 60°  January 10th

Coldest high temp was 41°  January 26th & 27th


Warmest low temp was 48°  January 3rd

Coldest low temp was 25°  January 1st


19 days above normal.

5 day right at normal.

7 days below normal.

11 days with lows at or below freezing.

January averaged 1.84°F above normal.


Precipitation:

Precipitation fell 14 days.

17 dry days.

The wettest day was January 18th with .75” of rain.

We ended the month with 2.93” of precipitation which is only 49% of normal and 3.03” below our normal total precipitation for January.

No snowfall.


A fairly “boring” month weather wise with one other notable highlight worth mentioning: the wind gust to 54mph on January 5th.  Otherwise a very quiet month for weather events.

In summary: January 2019 was slightly warmer than normal, and much drier than normal.

December 2018 Stats

December 2018

(Salem, Oregon)

Warmest high temp was 58°   December 18th

Coldest high temp was 40°   December 9th


Warmest low temp was 48°   December 18th

Coldest low temp was 25°   December 6th & 7th


Temperature:

22 days above normal

1 day right at normal

8 days below normal

7 days with lows at or below freezing.


Precipitation:

Precipitation fell 20 days.

11 days were completely dry.

The wettest day was December 18th with 1.27” of rain.

We ended the month with 6.04” of rain.  That equates to 0.82” below normal.

No snow again…


December 2018 was quite a bit warmer than average ending at 3.45° above normal.  In the precipitation category the Salem airport recorded 88% of it’s normal rainfall for December.  Much closer to average than what we had back in November. 

In summary: December 2018 was warmer than normal and slightly drier than normal.

November Stats

November 2018 has come and gone and I thought I would share some fun (at least in my mind) weather stats for the month.  Feel free to show this knowledge off  to your friends, co-workers, and family members.  They will be impressed I’m sure!  😉  These stats are for Salem, OR and come from the Salem Airport.  They are available online if you wish to learn more.


November 2018

Warmest high temp was 67°   November 2nd

Coldest high temp was 43°   November 25th


Warmest low temp was 57°   November 1st

Coldest low temp was 25°   November 20th


For temperature we had:

17 days above normal

1 day right at normal

12 days below normal

7 days with lows at or below freezing.


Precipitation:

Precipitation fell 12 days.

18 days were completely dry.

The wettest day was November 27th with 1.06” of rain.

We ended the month with only 3.86” of rain.  That equates to 2.64” below normal.

No snow (of course).


November 2018 will go down in the record books as much drier than normal month with roughly 59% of our typical November rainfall, and slightly warmer than normal by about 1.87°.

That’s all the stats I have.  Now get out there and show everyone just how smart you are!!

 


For the deepest of learners:

The process for determining whether or not a day is above or below normal temperature wise is complicated, but works like this.  First add the high & low temps together, then divide the answer by 2.  For example, on December 2nd the high was 49° & the low was 38°.  Those two numbers added up equal 87°.  Divide 87° by 2 and we get 43.5°.  Round to nearest whole number, which in this case is 44°.   Do the same process with the normal high and low temps for the day.  The normal temps on December 2nd are 48° and 36° respectively.  Adding those together gives us 84°.  Divide 84° by 2 and we end up with 42°

The difference between these two numbers (44° & 42°) determines the answer.

44° – 42° =This means December 2nd, 2018 will officially go down as 2 degrees above normal.
